Just curious if you're wondering about it. Yep, that's my question. But since I'm at it, let me address a few things you might find of interest.

There has been a lot of confusion about what's going on. I used to be an IRS phone collection representative and I have many friends who still are. Here's what I know to be true:

WMR, the refund hotine, and the cell phone apps all access the same database. Until it says that your direct deposit is scheduled for a specific date or indicates a particular error code, the information it presents is subject to change.

If you call the IRS you could receive one of these reponses to your refund question:

1. "We are processing your return but a direct deposit date has not been scheduled. Normal processing time is three weeks"

2. "There has been a delay processing your return" (with possibly an explanation why).

3. "You are scheduled to receive your direct deposit on _____. If you're fortunate to get that response, it's a done deal unless you put the wrong bank information on your return."

Phone reps are instructed NOT to speculate about reasons a refund may be delayed, but some do. This only adds to the confusion.

Most of the current processing delays are a result of the need to "fine-tune" the fraud detection program the IRS uses to prevent fraudulent refunds from going out. (The IRS is understandably reluctant to give more details so as to not give the crooks information about how it works). The delays could be 1 or 2 weeks, but even so, the IRS expects the refunds to go out within the normal processing time.

Even though refunds can very well be issued in less than 10 days (a friend had hers on the 20th!) the IRS never guarantees a specific date. I've seen some posts here complain that the IRS charges penalties and interest when they don't pay or file on time, but the IRS can take all the time it wants to send them their money. Hogwash. The IRS gives you FOUR MONTHS to file and pay. Even a mailed return without direct deposit only takes 6-8 weeks. Yes, many of us could use that money. In fact, this is the first year I can remember that I didn't need the money as soon as I could get it. So while I very much appreciate the frustration, its simply not fair to vilify the IRS and its employees for not getting you the money a week or two earlier. And keep in mind that many of you are receiving large refunds due to the earned income tax credit. This is free money.

Try to be patient and realize that the IRS and its employees are working as hard as they can to get refunds out timely.
